Contours Vol. 21 No 1 'Water in Tourism'

Water is a basic hualtman right. Yet, up to 30 thousand people die each day as a consequence of its shortage. Every effort, including legislation, must be made to ensure water security, which means conserving water, and ensuring that it reaches all, especially the marginalised and the poor.

Tourism is notorious for its higher than average per capita consumption of natural resources, especially water. In many cases water is diverted from the locals to serve the tourism industry. In this issue of Contours we focus on the importance of water in tourism and yet again, we ask the same question- why are the needs of tourists put above the needs of the local people?
